Lockpick Village
The Rochester chapter of TOOOL (The Open Organisation of Lockpickers) will be onhand once again this year to run the Lockpick Village. Attendees will be free to learn, play, and socialize while enjoying mini-lectures and shared lockpicking advice. Presentations will be given by TOOOL members throughout the day, to provide instruction on how pin & tumbler locks function, why picking works, and proper picking techniques.
Interlock Booth
Stop by the hackerspace booth and meet Interlock Rochester. They’ll be demoing some of their 3D printing capabilities, putting together circuit boards – heck, you may even get to see a demonic robot or two!. Interlock Rochester is a non-profit organization that is member supported and community owned. If you’re interested in checking out what they do, or finding a good time to visit the space, stop by the booth and geek out.
Activities likely to be present:
- 3D Printing Demo Party
- Soldering and Hand Burning Station
- Turning crafts into robots
Hacker Battleship
In prior years, we’ve held a hacking competition we’ve called “capture the pile”. Based on last year’s feedback, we’ve completely abandoned this, and are replacing it with Hacker Battleship. The rules are pretty simple:
- Teams register for the competition (teams of 1 are permitted).
- “The House” has a 7×7 battleship grid laid out
- Each coordinate on the grid is tied to a hacking challenge of some kind.
- All of the teams work to sink all of The House’s ships.
- When a challenge is solved, the corresponding coordinate is revealed as either a hit or a miss.
- Points are awarded for
- solving a challenge
- hitting a ship
- sinking a ship
- At the end of the competition, the team with the most points wins the game, and a (to be determined) prize.
We’re pretty excited about this game. To our knowledge it’s unique among the CTF challenges out there, and we think it will be tons of fun.
Crypto Challenge
In the past, we’ve done a pretty poor job of letting people know that this existed. We’re fixing that this year by making it very clear: BSidesROC has a fantastic crypto challenge, designed by none other than the super smart Darth Null. If you are unfamiliar with how crypto challenges at hacker conferences work, here’s a brief breakdown:
- The goal of the challenge is to correctly identify a specific phrase
- Hidden throughout the conference are puzzles
- Attendees must find these puzzles, and solve them.
- As each puzzle is solved, a clue about the phrase is provided.
- The winner is the first person or team to present the target phrase to the staff.
There will be a (to be determined) prize to the winner of the crypto challenge.
Coding Challenge
Introducing the first ever BSidesROC Coding Challenge! This competition will test the coding abilities of the contestants. Note that this is not an exploit challenge, it’s development in a pure sense. To review the rules, see the Coding Challenge Page.
Tea Room Talks
Due to popular demand, we’re introducing a second track of talks in the afternoon that will be open to the public. That’s right – anyone interested in giving a 20 – 30 minute presentation can stand up and perform. We expect a good variety of subjects. If you’re interested in presenting, fill out the form below, or sign up at the con.
PGP/GPG Key Signing Party
One of our attendees suggeste the idea that we do a PGP/GPG key signing party. So… ask and you shall receive. At 12:30 PM (during the lunch break) expect to meet local people and learn about PGP and GPG. If you have never done one of these before, we’ll give you more information.
